My disciplinary roots are in linguistics, most specifically in the study of language contact. I am the author of four books to date (with CUP, OUP, Routledge and Stockholm University Press), have edited or co-edited a further 11 volumes and journal special collections, and authored multiple journal articles and book chapters
I have been described as an empathetic leader and an inspiring mentor who can motivate people to achieve things they would not have thought themselves capable of.

I have taught and conducted research at universities in Europe, Asia, and Australia. I have also been involved in curriculum development and higher education management. At the University of Hong Kong (HKU), I led the Humanities area on the Common Core Curriculum Committee, in HKU’s major revision of its curriculum (2010 — 2013), a time when, along with the University of Melbourne, HKU was leading in reimagining undergraduate curricula. I also sat on HKU’s Senate and HKU’s Campus Development and Planning Committee.

In Australia, I have been Head of School at the University of Sydney and Curtin University. In both institutions I have been active in research strategy, grantsmanship, and external engagement in areas of humanities, social sciences, and creative industries.

I have also taught hundreds of students basic self-defence, safety and awareness skills, focusing especially on young women and children.
