Research
As a researcher, my focus lies in the linguistic typology of East Asia, delving deeply into language contact and Creole studies.
Linguistic diversity of China, South, and Southeast Asia.
Evolutionary theories of contact-induced language change and Asian pidgin and Creole languages.
Documentation of endangered languages – Sri Lanka Malay.
Current projects:
(1) Endangered languages in low-lying nations, intertwining themes of endangerment, social justice, and climate change.
Drowning Communities. Climate change and cultural survival in maritime communities.
The displacement caused by environmental changes such as sea level rise and extreme weather events profoundly impacts cultural knowledge systems in low-lying coastal areas and small-island states. We are particularly interested in three Asian regions: Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. This project examines how these regions are affected and explores efforts to mitigate the loss of cultural knowledge.
(2) The epistemology of Creole studies through the lens of Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci.
